Swimming & diving: Tigers triumph in finale
Farmington ran out the lineup it plans to feature at this weekend’s Missota Conference Championships and the results were positive in Monday’s regular season finale against Rochester John Marshall.
The Tigers won just four of the meet’s 12 events, but finished 2-3 in six others while edging the Rockets 94-92 at the Dodge Middle School pool.
The Rockets jumped out to a 12-2 lead after the 200 medley relay, but Farmington stayed close with a pair of 2-3 finishes, one from Ian Alexander and Eric Schimmel in the 200 freestyle and one from Garrett Haugen and Brandon Dion in the 200 individual medley. Daniel Berg followed with a first-place finish in the 50 freestyle and Jonathan Bovee easily claimed the 1-meter dive to draw the score closer.
Two more 2-3 finishes followed, one from Dion and Brock Lange in the 100 butterfly and one from Berg and Schimmel in the 100 freestyle. The Tigers finally took the lead thanks to back-to-back first-place showings from Alexander in the 500 freestyle and the 200 freestyle relay team of Dion, Berg, Haugen and Schimmel.
Ben Gunderson and David Bovee followed with another 2-3 effort in the 100 backstroke and Robin DeCastro earned runner-up honors in the 100 breaststroke.
Farmington clinched the meet with another 2-3 finish, this time in the 400 freestyle relay.
The Tigers begin championship season Saturday by hosting the Missota Conference Championships at Dodge Middle School. The Section 1AA Championship prelims begin Feb. 20 at Rochester Rec Center.
