Swimming: Tigers take 12th at True Team State
Despite a second straight 12th-place finish, Farmington head coach Ryan Hamen said the True Team State Meet is a great experience for his swimmers.
"It's a great opportunity for our boys to swim at the University of Minnesota.... Every chance we have to swim at the U is a chance to feel like a great swimmer and earning the spot to attend is always a pleasure," said Hamen, whose Tigers qualified by winning their second straight Section 1AA True Team title. "We had a lot of great times ... and many swimmers who did not compete got a front row seat to watch most of the best teams in the state."
The Tigers scored 673 1/2 points, 335 off the pace of 11th-place Cretin-Derham Hall. Eden Prairie outscored runner-up Minnetonka 2,157-1,969 1/2 for the team title.
The team's top finishes came from Evan Carufel and Christopher Kirchmann, who each earned a pair of 12th-place showings. Carufel came in 12th out of 38 divers with a score of 282.90 points, while Kirchmann was 12th in the 100 freestyle in a time of 50.85 seconds.
Kirchmann also placed 13th in the 50 freestyle in 23.23 seconds and swam legs of both of the Tigers' 20th-place relays. Kirchman, Connor Kealy, Aaron Lane and Zach Holton combined to come in 20th in the 400 freestyle relay and Kirchmann, Eric Schimmel, Kealy and Carufel were 20th in the 200 freestyle relay.
Holton added a 27th-place time of 59.12 in the 100 butterfly and came in 32nd in the 200 individual medley in 2:15.17.
Lane placed 33rd in the 100 backstroke and Nick Stepan was 33rd in the 100 breaststroke. Thirty-fourth place finishes were turned in by Carufel in the 50 freestyle and Jonathan Bovee in the 1-meter dive. Lane was 36th in the 200 individual medley and Aaron Cochnauer 37th in the 100 butterfly.
The Tigers have four more regular season dual meets before the Missota Conference Championships get under way Feb. 11 at Northfield. The Section 1AA Championships follow Feb. 23 and 25 in Rochester.
