Two members of the Farmington track and field team have continued competing since the school season came to an end last month.

Sophomore Chad Retterath qualified for the upcoming Region 8 Meet in Indianola, Iowa, with high finishes in both the 1,500-meter run and 400-meter run at the USATF Minnesota Association Championships June 20 in Eagan.

Senior teammate Logan Hussung, fresh off a state championship in the discus, made a trip to Iowa last Thursday to compete in the Junior competition at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Drake University in Des Moines.

Hussung, the only 18-year-old Minnesotan in the field, finished 18th in the shot put with a toss of 53 feet, 8 inches, and 19th in the discus with a spin of 156-4. Hussung's throwing career will resume this winter as a member of the University of Minnesota track team.

Retterath will begin preparing for his junior year of cross country at Farmington High School after running at Indianola July 10. He qualified thanks to a first-place time of 4:31.89 in the 1,500 and a 56.67 clocking in the 400. He ran despite breaking his hand two days earlier.

Retterath hopes to cut his 1,500 time down to 4:28 at the Region 8 Meet, where the top three finishers qualify for nationals.

"I want to do a lot better at regionals," he said. "I wasn't super preapred for the race, so I was okay with the time. But I know I can do better."
