Beginning April 25, North Trail Elementary will take part in the 2011 GreenSneakers Eco Challenge for Education. Students will begin collecting slightly worn sneakers in adult and child sizes. It's OK for shoes to have small holes, but nothing larger than a dime. Soles and backs must be intact, and the shoes must include laces.

GreenSneakers will pay North Trail up to 50 cents a pound for the shoes. With an average pair of shoes weighing in at about two pounds, that is roughly $1 a pair for the school. Eventually the shoes go to a sorting facility where the GreenSneakers staff process the collection, keeping them from the local landfill and making them ready for distribution to others in need.

North Trail is looking to collect as many pairs of sneakers as possible. Anyone who has sneakers that are too small or no longer needed can bring them to North Trail during regular school hours between April 25 and May 13. The school is located at 5580 170th St.
