VFW baseball: Rain halts tourney appearance
Last weekend’s persistent rain put a halt to the Farmington VFW baseball team’s tournament in Burnsville.
“We were trying to battle our way out of a jam all day. Stillwater got at least two guys on every inning, which really puts the pressure on the defense and the pitching,” Farmington coach Jon Graff said. “You’re only going to get out of so many of those situations unscathed.”
Leadoff hitter Max Barthel and Luke Johnston paced Farmington with two hits apiece. Dylan Bergstad drove in the team’s lone run with a third-inning single.
During the week, Post 7662 scored a pair of victories. They held on for a 9-6 win over St. Louis Park on Tuesday and shut out St. Croix Lutheran 8-0 on Wednesday.
Bergstad provided five shutout innings against St. Croix Lutheran before Coleman Farthing came in to get the last six outs.
Christian Groves set the tone for the offense with a double, a triple, two runs scored and two RBI. Justin King had two hits and three RBI and Bauer went 2 for 3 with an RBI.
“This was by far our most complete game yet. We got great pitching, put the ball in play on offense and had one of our better fielding nights,” Graff said. “The guys did a great job of doing the little things that make teams successful.”
Against St. Louis Park, Post 7662 pushed across four runs in the top of the seventh to break a 5-5 tie. The big inning made a winner of Jacob Dentinger, who allowed three runs over the final two innings.
King started and surrendered three runs (two earned) through six.
Bergstad went 3 for 5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Bauer also clubbed three hits, including a triple, and Johnston was 2 for 4 with two RBI.
The teams combined for 13 errors.
“Fortunately, we were able to capitalize on more of their mistakes than they did on ours,” Graff said.
Post 7662 hosted Eagan on Tuesday and plays again tonight at Minneapolis Southwest.
