Volleyball: Inexperienced Tiger team will rely on leadership

The Farmington High School volleyball team will rely on a lot of young players this year.

Looking at last year's roster, other than Katie Habeck and Jordan Bridges the team was largely made up of seniors who were playing varsity for the first time. What kind of challenges did that present?

When you have that many girls without experience, it takes time to get acclimated to that level of competition. Last year's group relied too heavily on those with the experience.

A lot of new faces will be in the varsity lineup once again this year. How do you go about getting all these players adjusted to the speed of the varsity game?

Many of the girls have been competing at this level in the offseason. That will help. I have always tried to convey that no matter who is on the other side of the net, we have to take care of our side. Hopefully, we can take care of our side and catch up to the speed of the game quickly.

Who are some players back from last year's team who you expect to be solid contributors?

Laura Steege (senior, captain, left side), Bekah Lippert (senior, captain, middle), Allie Pierskalla (senior, right side), Andrea Smith (senior, setter), Mia Johnston (junior, setter). This group needs to step up as leaders on and off the court. Leadership will be a key to our success this season.

What are your goals for this year's team?

I want this group to learn to compete and win. Once they believe in themselves, I think they have the potential to surprise some people.
