Volleyball: Tigers close out tournament with two wins
The Farmington volleyball team put an end to its five-match losing streak and came on strong to collect 13th place by coming away victorious in its final two contests Saturday at the Keller Klassic in Coon Rapids.
The Tigers played competitively in their first two matches, but eventually lost to Grand Rapids 25-27, 12-25 and Benilde-St. Margaret's 27-25, 18-25 and 12-15.
"We played quite well in most of our first match against Grand Rapids. Game 2 of that was better than the score indicated. Grand Rapids had so many extraordinary defensive plays. Their scrappy defense was what won Game 2," Farmington coach Mike Woody said. "Benilde was a lot of the same, good volleyball. They also caught fire defensively and made it hard to score points in Game 2."
Farmington bounced back by defeating Fridley 25-7, 25-19 and New Richmond 25-20, 19-25 and 15-13 to finish the tournament with a record of 2-2.
Orono won the 19-team tournament, defeating Deer River, Grand Rapids, New Richmond and Mahtomedi, each in two games.
"We were competitive in all four matches, and considering we have been bitten by the injury bug I was really happy about that," Woody said.
The team was without injured middle hitters Morgan Cecchettini and Kelsey Lindell, and Summer Skokan saw limited duty due to an elbow problem.
The Tigers (4-5) traveled to Hastings Tuesday and are back at Tiger Gym tonight to continue Missota Conference play with a match against Red Wing.
