The Farmington volleyball team advanced to the Section 1AAA semifinals for the first time in four years with a four-set victory on the road at Albert Lea Friday night.

The fifth-seeded Tigers lost Game 1, 22-25, but came back to win the next three in a row by scores of 25-19, 25-22 and 25-21 to advance to a matchup with No. 1 seed Rochester Mayo tonight in Rochester. The Spartans have a record of 22-4.Farmington’s Vanessa Garske sends the ball over the net during last week’s Section 1AAA  tournament win over Red Wing at Tiger G “We made a couple of errors down the stretch in Game 1, and we were aggressive all the way to the end in Games two through four,” Farmington coach Mike Woody said. “We did what we needed to do to win, compete for every point all the way to the end. We played well, but did not play our best. This was good for us. We needed to prove to ourselves that we could win when we don’t have our best stuff.”

Freshman hitter Kenzie Hesse paced the Tigers (19-11) with 25 kills. Freshman Emma Fahning added 13 kills, a match-high six ace serves and 15 digs.

Ruthie Schmitt added 11 digs and Diana Comes and Hesse tacked on nine apiece. Schmitt also provided 39 of the team’s 43 set assists.

Comes also received a team-leading 26 serves. Fahning had 19 and Hesse 16.

Tonight’s Section 1AAA semifinal gets under way at 7 p.m. at Mayo High School. On the other side of the bracket, No. 2 Owatonna is hosting No. 3 Northfield. The winners will meet in the section title game Saturday afternoon at Mayo Civic Center.
