Volleyball: Tigers send Austin packing
The Farmington volleyball team started the season in fine fashion last Thursday with a convincing sweep of the Austin Packers at Tiger Gym.
The Tigers used sustained runs in all three games to pull away for a 25-13, 25-9, 25-12 victory.
A long service run by Emma Fahning helped build an 18-5 lead in Game 1. Game 2 featured a 9-0 streak by the home team and Game 3 ended with an 11-1 surge.
"All the things we talked in the preseason about wanting to do well, we did well. We're definitely building on last year," Farmington coach Mike Woody said. "I felt like we were getting into an offense about 80 percent of the time, which is much better than the 50-50 or so we were at last year"
Kenzie Hesse led the improved offense, slamming a game-high 13 kills. Fahning added six kills and Ruthie Schmitt and Vanessa Garke each added three.
Schmitt set up all those kills with a team-high 31 set assists.
Libero Diana Comes led the defense with 10 digs and added seven serve receptions. Fahning led the team with eight serve receptions and slammed six ace serves.
Morgan Cecchittini made her presence felt in the front row with five blocks.
The Tigers (1-0) traveled to Irondale Tuesday and are back at Tiger Gym tonight against Apple Valley.
