Volunteers who possess an old-time skill or craft are needed to demonstrate in Dakota City during the Dakota County Fair Aug. 10 to 16. Sought are people who are talented at such things as woodcarving, wood burning, crocheting, knitting, sewing and other needlecrafts, cooking on a wood stove, canning, churning butter, making candles or soap, keeping bees or working with beeswax and honey and blacksmithing. Also desired are someone who could set up a model train and people who could entertain in the village with bluegrass, blues or gospel music.
Volunteers can demonstrate for several hours, a day or several days, whatever their schedule permits, according to Mary Hendricks, Dakota City Board member. The presence of volunteers will enhance the village experience, she said.
During the fair, costumed interpreters will be on hand in all buildings to help visitors understand what life was like in a 1900-era village.
Hendricks is also looking for donations of old wooden chairs for use in village buildings. The chairs can be varnished but not painted.
For information about demonstrating or donating, call Hendricks at 651-460-6071 (home), 612-360-5543 (cell) or contact her via e-mail at mkh1387@yahoo.com. For more information about Dakota City, call 651-460-8050.
