Rosemount exacted a little revenge on Farmington in Wednesday’s third-place game of the Louis Schmitz Holiday Classic.
The Irish, who lost to the Tigers 4-3 on a late goal in the first round of last year’s tournament, turned their luck around with a 4-3 overtime win over the hosts Wednesday afternoon at Schmitz-Maki Arena.
The Tigers, who opened the tournament with a 2-1 overtime win over Sartell/Sauk Rapids on Monday, fell to the consolation bracket after a 4-2 setback to eventual tournament champion Hastings on Tuesday night. The Raiders improved to 11-2-2 as they scored victories over Lakeville North, Farmington and Cottage Grove en route to the title.
Farmington got six of its seven tournament goals from junior forward Krystal Baumann, who supplied all three scores against Rosemount to up her season total to a team-leading 19. She has scored at least one goal in all 11 games in which she’s played.
Baumann opened the scoring against Rosemount with a first-period goal, then tied the game at 3-3 with a pair of third-period scores. Assists were provided by Angie Schull, Molly Friedlund and Hannah Alexander.
The Irish held a 36-29 advantage in shots on goal. Sophomore goaltender Jessica Erchul finished with 32 saves.
Erchul stopped 29 Hastings shots on Tuesday, but the Raiders were able to advance to the championship with a 4-2 win.
Baumann and Alexander each scored goals for the home team and Betsy Anderson provided an assist.
Baumann scored two goals, including the game-winning short-hander 5:03 into overtime, in Monday’s 2-1 win over Sartell/Sauk Rapids.
The Storm’n’Sabers scored their lone goal on the power play to tie the game at 1-1 late in the second period. Erchul shut them down the rest of the way and collected 27 saves to pick up her eighth victory.
The Tigers, tied for second with Red Wing at 3-1 in the Missota Conference, resume their league schedule this week. They traveled to Richfield to take on Holy Angels on Tuesday and will be back at home tonight to face New Prague.
