Fifth-ranked Rochester Century backed up its status as one of the state’s premier teams by blanking Farmington 7-0 in the first round of the section team tournament last Tuesday.
The Tigers managed to score just three games in singles play — one at No. 3 and two at 4 singles — and three games in three doubles matches.
“I thought we played pretty well and competed without being intimidated by their power games,” Farmington coach Jack Olwell said. “This team beat our conference champion (Red Wing) 7-0, so I guess we are in good company. Another consolation is that 50 percent of Minnesota’s teams suffered the same fate as we did. Fifty percent more will go home on Thursday.... I am proud of the way our girls did not hang their heads before, during or after the match.”
Maggie Rudorfer and Meghan Lindstrom were blanked 6-0, 6-0 in the top two singles matches. Melanie Kappes fell 1-6, 0-6 at No. 3 singles and Megan Stivers dropped a 1-6, 1-6 match at No. 4 singles.
The No. 1 doubles team of Danielle Froehling and Katie Burgess also managed to score a game in each set.
The Tigers close out the season today with the Section 1AA Team Tournament.
