Farmington’s girls basketball team used a familiar script to dispose of Rochester Mayo and move within a game of the school record for consecutive wins.
The Tigers overcame a bit of a slow start with another dominant defensive effort, and extended their lead throughout the second half in an eventual 63-38 win — their seventh in a row — over Rochester Mayo last Tuesday night in Rochester.
The Spartans trailed 25-16 at halftime, but crept back within 29-25 with 14:30 to go. However, the Tigers responded with a 12-0 run over the next six minutes to take control.
“We have had teams make runs at us in all of our games and we have reacted positively to all of them. Our kids are playing with a great deal of confidence and that will carry through any game,” Farmington coach Jason Berg said. “We have shown that if a team makes a run on us we don’t panic — we are able to stay focused on what we do well and execute.”
Junior guard Isis Alexander scored a season-high 14 points, including eight during a 16-2 run that put the Tigers up 21-9 late in the first half.
Taylor Meyer added 11 points and seven rebounds and Elena Koch chipped in a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.
Senior guard Shelby Calhoun chipped in four assists and three steals. She helped the Tigers force 29 turnovers and limit the Spartans to 12 of 43 shooting from the field.
The team will take the court for the first time in eight days Wednesday afternoon when it travels to Ellsworth (Wis.) for a 1:45 game against the Panthers, who are coached by Berg’s father, Dave Berg. Jason won the first-ever meeting between the two coaches last season, 54-43 at Tiger Gym.
