Farmington girls hockey coach Jon Holmes described last Tuesday’s game in Rochester as “a head-scratcher.”
It’s easy to see why considering his Tigers outshot host Rochester Mayo 53-14, but couldn’t put the puck in the net in a 1-0 loss.
“Fourteen was generous too. It was one of those games that if you have been around hockey long enough everyone has either played in or watched a team just not have any luck finding the twine,” Holmes said. “We played well. Our defensive end did not even need to be resurfaced after each period. We kept the play in their zone the entire time.”
Mayo goaltender Rebecca Graham stopped all 53 Farmington shots for her third shutout of the season.
Gabby Laures’ shot deflected off two players before sneaking past Farmington goaltender Jessica Erchul for the lone goal of the game in the second period.
“We thought not much of it until late in the third when we realized that the lone goal may end up being the decision maker,” Holmes said. “Their goalie played well and their defense did a pretty good job of clearing the rebounds. Not much we could have changed about our play.”
The Tigers, now 6-5, host the Louis Schmitz Holiday Classic this week at Schmitz-Maki Arena. They open play with a first-round matchup against Apple Valley (4-7) at 7 p.m. Tuesday night.
