Farmington boys swimming and diving coach Ryan Hamen acknowledged that his team started out “pretty flat” before moving up to eighth place with a strong second-half performance at last Thursday’s 11-team Apple Valley Eagle Invitational.
Of the Tigers’ eight top-10 finishes, seven came in events five through 11 when the team accumulated the majority of its 1,541 points. Stillwater scored 2,306 points to edge Lakeville South (2,266.5) and Lakeville North (2,002.5) for the team title.
Returning all-stater Tyler Magalis provided the team’s top showing in the 1-meter dive, where he finished second with a score of 341.40. Magalis also joined Brian Huls, Zack Holton and Loren Hatten for a fourth-place finish in the meet-opening 200 medley relay, and Hatten, Huls and Allen Berg for an eighth-place showing in the 200 freestyle relay.
Huls followed up the 200 freestyle relay with a fourth-place performance in the 100 backstroke. He was also seventh in the 100 freestyle.
Berg added a ninth-place showing in the 500 freestyle and Holton (100 butterfly) and Hatten (100 breaststroke) each cracked the top 10 in one individual event.
The Tigers swam again Tuesday in a dual meet at Hastings and will be back in action tonight in a 6 p.m. conference dual meet against Red Wing at Twin Bluff Middle School.
