A promising dual loss to a tough Faribault team Thursday night gave way to a long weekend for the Farmington wrestling team.

The Tigers had the Falcons on the ropes, winning seven of the first 10 matches to start the dual. The home team rallied by taking the final four weights — with three pins and a forfeit — to secure a 40-33 win.

The Tigers returned to town for Saturday’s annual Farmington Tiger Duals, but the home mats were not kind to the hosts as they suffered dual losses to Chatfield (48-16), Lakeville North (45-27) and Park of Cottage Grove (60-11).

“We did not wrestle well at all,” first-year Farmington head coach Chad Olson said. “We were not able to duplicate the intensity level we had on Thursday at Faribault.”

Three Farmington wrestlers came away from the tournament undefeated — Kyle Benjamin, Carl Elmer and Joe Hoeve.

Benjamin went 3-0 at 103 pounds, where he won two decisions and closed out his day with a 16-1 technical fall against Park of Cottage Grove. Benjamin’s second decision came by a score of 2-0 against a Lakeville North opponent who had beaten him in their previous five matchups.

Elmer continued his dominance in the 145 pound weight class where he posted two easy pins before sitting out against Park of Cottage Grove. Elmer, ranked fifth in the state at 145 pounds, now has 97 career victories.

Hoeve opened with a 5-3 decision against Chatfield, then pinned his Lakeville North opponent before closing the meet with an 8-4 decision against Park.

Hoeve also provided one of the seven individual wins Thursday night against Faribault when he pinned his opponent in the first period. Chris McCue also posted a pin at 140 pounds.

Jacob Gabbard, Jake Rudeen and Tyler Beckett each won by major decision, Elmer earned a 6-1 decision and Connor Phu claimed a forfeit at 112 pounds.

The Tigers compete again tonight at home in a triangular against Northfield and Rosemount.
