Boys hockey: All-or-nothing offense
It’s been an all-or-nothing kind of season for the Farmington boys hockey team. In 17 games, the Tigers have scored six more more goals eight times and two or fewer goals nine times. Predictably, they’re 8-0 in the high-scoring games. In the low-scoring games, they’re 0-9. They have yet to score three, four or five goals in a game.By: Matt Steichen, The Farmington Independent
They have yet to score three, four or five goals in a game.
Last week’s games were of the low-scoring variety and the Tigers dropped them both. They were on the short end of a 3-2 Chanhassen rally last Tuesday at Victoria Recreation Center, then fell behind by two goals early in a 4-2 loss to Red Wing Thursday night at Schmitz-Maki Arena.
The Wingers led 3-0 midway through the second period before Dan Handberg got the Tigers on the board with a power play goal on a pass from Zak Payne.
Tyler Grubb added his team-leading 23rd goal 11:45 into the third period.
Red Wing had a 41-28 advantage in shots on goal. Goaltender Aaron Dahl stopped 37 shots in his fourth start of the season.
The Tigers took a 2-1 lead on Handberg’s late goal last Tuesday at Chanhassen, but the Storm scored twice in the final eight minutes to escape with a 3-2 victory.
Handberg tied the game with a power play goal 10:28 into the second period. His second goal gave the Tigers their first lead, but it lasted just 16 seconds. Chanhassen tied the game with a goal at 9:52, then took the lead for good at 13:01.
Dahl stopped 26 of 29 shots in the loss.
“Dahl played well. The goals they got were from areas that we cannot be giving shots up from,” Farmington coach Keith Revels said. “It’s disappointing, but we competed and if we continue to do so we will be in every game the rest of the way.”
The Tigers hosted Bloomington Kennedy for a non-conference game Tuesday night at Schmitz-Maki Arena. They compete again Saturday against Rochester Century at the Rochester Recreation Center before returning to Missota Conference play next Tuesday against league-leading Holy Angels.
