The Farmington wrestling team almost knocked off Lakeville South in a dual meet last Friday in Lakeville.

The Tigers held a 34-33 lead heading into the heavyweight match, but South’s top-ranked Zane Peterson pinned Brett Hoffman to give the Cougars a 39-34 win.

“It was by far the best we wrestled all year,” Farmington coach Chad Olson said. “We still had to forfeit two weights due to two wrestlers not making weight on Friday, but were still able to be competitive in the dual. It’s a great time to start wrestling well.”

Kyle Benjamin won the first match of the meet by forfeit, then Jacob Gabbard won by disqualification at 119 pounds.

The forfeit started a string of five straight wins for the Tigers. Jake Rudeen won a 10-1 decision at 125 pounds, then Chris McCue followed with a 9-0 decision at 130 pounds. Josh Iverson held on for a 10-8 overtime decision in the 135-pound match and sixth-ranked 140-pounder Carl Elmer pinned his opponent to give the Tigers their biggest lead of the dual.

Tyler Beckett added a tech fall win at 160 pounds before the Cougars won at 171, 189, 215 and heavyweight.
