Girls basketball: Meyer scores 1,000th point

Junior Taylor Meyer scored her 1,000th career point with a free throw early in the first half and Farmington went on to win its school-record 20th game of the season, 53-42 over Northfield Friday night at Tiger Gym. The game wasn’t as close as the final score would indicate. The Tigers held Northfield scoreless over the first five-plus minutes and led 29-9 at the break. The score was 38-16 before the Raiders started to slowly chip away over the final 10 minutes.

Meyer — who entered averaging 15 points per game — scored just five while becoming the sixth Farmington player to reach 1,000 points for her career. She joined former teammates Abby Kenealy and Kirstee Rotty, as well as Krista Cordes, Lisa Sowieja and Julie Bauer in the 1,000-point club.

“They played a lot of junk defenses trying to make it hard on Taylor,” Farmington coach Jason Berg said. “She did a good job of not forcing things on offense.”

Instead, Meyer helped limit Northfield to three first-half field goals on the defensive end, grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and left the scoring to her teammates. Jordan Bridges scored seven of her 11 points in the first half and Isis Alexander added 10 points.

All nine players who got in the game scored at least three points. Elena Koch had seven points and eight rebounds, Mariah Mincke scored six points and Jamie Kenealy contributed four points and seven rebounds. The Tigers established a 45-33 advantage on the glass.

With the win, the Tigers stayed one game behind Chanhassen in the Missota Conference heading into the final week of the regular season. They traveled to Chaska on Tuesday and close out the schedule with a home game against New Prague Friday night at Tiger Gym.

Farmington, Shakopee and the Trojans sit in a three-way tie for second place with matching records of 9-3. The 10-2 Storm control their own destiny, but must win road games at New Prague and at Red Wing this week to hold on to the top spot.

The Tigers started the second half with a 17-8 run and pulled away for a 58-40 conference win over Holy Angels last Tuesday in Richfield.

Meyer finished with a game-high 22 points, including nine during that decisive start to the second half. Kenealy and Mincke each added three points during the spurt and Shelby Calhoun added a bucket to make it 40-26 with 12 minutes to go.

Meyer made 8 of 11 shots from the field, grabbed four steals and added a team-high eight rebounds. Seven rebounds apiece from Bridges and Koch and six from Kenealy helped the Tigers to another dominant effort (43-26) on the glass.

“We did a much better job rebounding in the second half,” Berg said. “They shot 27 threes, so there were lots of long rebounds and we really did a nice job chasing those down in the second half.”

Kenealy also scored nine points, while Koch added eight and Bridges five.

Paige Steele chipped in three points, four rebounds and four assists.
