After five years Jason Berg has stepped down from his position as head coach of the Farmington girls basketball team.

Berg has coached the team to a 76-50 record and two appearances in the section finals since taking over in 2006. He coached the boys basketball team from 1994-98 before serving as an assistant men's basketball coach at Luther College for eight years. Berg cited the amount of time and energy required as two of his reasons for stepping down as head girls coach.

"I have been thinking about this for a while. The decision basically came from knowing, right now, I do not have the energy to do all the things that go into being a varsity coach," Berg said. "I know what I need to do to feel like I can give the program a chance to be successful - from the time in the gym during the summer, to organizing leagues, to game prep, to game breakdown - and I just need to step back from all of that right now and recharge.

"It was a hard decision," he added. "I have spent a lot of time with people in the program over the last five years and it is hard. It becomes part of your and your family's life.... The experience has been awesome. The kids have been great. They have worked hard and really bought into what we were trying to do as a program. I am glad I had the opportunity to coach within that program."

Berg will continue to coach ninth grade football and JV baseball at Farmington, and isn't ruling out a return to coaching basketball at some level next season.
