Farmington headed up the second tier of teams in its first conference meet of the season Monday afternoon.
Opening on their home course at Fountain Valley, the Tigers posted a team score of 326 to place fifth out of eight teams. League newcomers Chaska and Chanhassen battled it out for the top spot, with Chaska scoring a 308-314 victory in its first Missota Conference meet. Shakopee edged New Prague 316-317 in the battle for third place.
“For it being the first Missota tournament of the year we fared pretty well,” Farmington coach Jon Holmes said. “We finished fifth, which if you consider we added two powerhouses in Chaska and Chanhassen and lost a top team in Prior Lake, we actually moved up two spots compared to last year.”
Leading the charge for the Tigers was junior Tommy May, who placed third out of 48 golfers with a round of 77. He carded a 37 on the front nine and a 40 on the back nine.
Seniors Mike Dalhed and Cooper Loew supplied the team’s next two scores, shooting rounds of 81 and 82, respectively.
“The boys put in a lot of time over the summer and these scores are definitely an improvement from last year,” Holmes said. “We have good ball strikers and good scramblers, but now we need to learn how to be good scorers. If they can learn to minimize their mistakes to a bogey versus a double or worse it goes a long way.”
The Tigers fell off the pace with the rest of their varsity lineup as Matt Provost, Trevor Hockert and Tony Lalani each turned in rounds of 86.
“Three of our scores at 77, 81 and 82 are not too shabby, but we really need to get a fourth score that is in the 70s,” Holmes said. “In high school golf par is 80, and we really need to be at or below that mythical par to compete.”
The Tigers’ meet Wednesday at Prior Lake has been rescheduled for next Wednesday, April 27. The team competes again next Tuesday at Emerald Greens Golf Course.
