Legion baseball: Wallace, Stibal lead Post 189 to victory

Zach Wallace didn’t get worked up after allowing two runs on back-to-back doubles in the first inning of last Thursday’s game at New Prague.

Instead, Wallace settled in and pitched the Farmington Legion Post 189 baseball team to victory. Wallace limited New Prague to two unearned runs over the next six innings and Post 189 used a 10-hit attack to pull away for a 10-4 road victory.

“(Wallace) is a finesse pitcher. He doesn’t overpower anybody, he’s just smart,” Farmington Legion coach Andy Pierskalla said. “He could have given up after those early hits, but he stuck in there and used his baseball intelligence to pitch out of it.”

Farmington (6-9) got the two runs back in the top of the third when Jake Baskerville drove in Matt Rudorfer with a double and scored on Nate Graham’s sacrifice fly.

An inning later, the visitors sent eight batters to the plate and tallied four more runs on five hits. John Stibal started the inning with a single and scored on a Drew Hegseth double. Jack Buss followed with an RBI triple and scored on a Rudorfer base hit. Spencer Merle capped off the inning with a two-run double to make it 6-2.

Post 189 pulled away with four more runs in the top of the seventh. Stibal highlighted the big inning with a towering two-run home run into the trees behind the left field wall and Rudorfer followed with a two-run single.

“(Stibal) is putting some hurt on the baseball and that’s great to see,” Pierskalla said.

Stibal, Rudorfer and Merle each finished with two hits.

Post 189 hosted New Prague Wednesday night and is back in action tonight at South St. Paul.
