After blowing a 2-0 lead in a five-set loss to Red Wing in Thursday night’s Missota Conference opener, the Farmington volleyball team needed something good to happen.
The Tigers got that at Saturday’s Coon Rapids Tournament. Coach Mike Woody’s squad pulled off three-set victories over Big Lake and Benilde-St. Margaret’s and were competitive in losses to Orono and Fridley en route to a 7th-place finish.
“Saturday went very well,” Woody said. “We pulled out a tough three-game match against Big Lake to start, which was big after the Thursday night debacle.... We finished with a marathon Game 3 vs. Benilde, winning 21-19. I was super proud of the effort the whole match and especially down the stretch.”
The Tigers (4-4) missed several opportunities to put Red Wing away Thursday, dropping a 25-22, 25-21, 18-25, 12-25, 14-16 decision. They recovered to take a 14-11 lead in Game 5 before Red Wing reeled off five straight points to complete the come-from-behind victory.
“We became complacent in Games 3 and 4, made lots of errors and gave away a lot of points. We actually played well in Game 5 before we froze up,” Woody said. “We have struggled in both of our wins (Albert Lea and Austin) and Thursday night to score that last point. It took six points at Albert Lea, three points vs. Austin and we had three opportunities last night and couldn’t get it done.”
Bekah Lippert led the Tigers with eight kills, five blocks and three ace serves.
Adrienne Jolicoeur had a team-high 18 digs and Rachel Eckert and Emily Nelson each had 14.
The Tigers resume their Missota Conference schedule when they travel to Chanhassen tonight. Game time is 7 p.m.
