The long drive to Grand Forks proved to be worth the effort.
The Farmington girls swimming and diving team got to compete against top competition from Minnesota and North Dakota while securing a fifth-place finish at the University of North Dakota Invitational.
The Tigers turned in second-place finishes in five of the meet’s 12 events and accumulated 222 points. Prior Lake defeated Century (N.D) 346-278 for the team title in a meet that also featured Marshall (266), Majettes, N.D. (240), Eagan (218), Grand Forks Central (175), Blue Jays, N.D. (151.5), Bismarck (132), Mandan, N.D. (118.5) and Grand Forks Red River (88).
The Tigers performed well in the relays, starting with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay by the foursome of Kaitlyn O’Reilly, Abby Haugen, Zoe Avestruz and Hannah Seitzinger. The team combined on a time of 1 minute, 56.69 seconds, just 35-hundredths of a second off the pace of event champion Century.
Seitzinger also joined Kirsten Kracke, Abby Haugen and Ellie Sundet for a sixth-place showing in the 200 freestyle relay. Kracke, O’Reilly, Avestruz and Cora Ruzicka closed out the meet by coming in fifth in the 400 freestyle relay.
O’Reilly and Avestruz each finished second in a pair of events.
O’Reilly recovered from the opening 200 medley relay in time to earn a runner-up finish in the 200 individual medley. Her 2:17.60 clocking was just over two seconds off the pace of Marshall’s first-place finisher. O’Reilly also came in second in the 100 backstroke in 1:01.12.
Avestruz, just a freshman, earned runner-up honors in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.32. She went on to place second in the 100 freestyle in 55.69, just over two seconds ahead of teammate Kracke, who placed sixth.
