Farmington’s inability to execute offensively ended up giving the Holy Angels offense too many opportunities in Friday night’s Missota Conference meeting in Richfield.
After a 42-yard touchdown run by senior Athen Ashton on their opening drive, the Tigers allowed five unanswered touchdowns – including three in the fourth quarter – in a 35-7 loss to the eighth-ranked (Class 4A) Stars in their Homecoming game at the StarDome.
“We looked good early on, then we couldn’t sustain our drives. We missed throws, had some drops and some overthrows. It wasn’t our typical, efficient passing game,” Farmington head coach Mark Froehling said. “We needed to sustain drives more to keep the ball out of their hands.”
Junior quarterback Darren Beenken completed just 7 of 30 passes for 62 yards. Ashton added 108 yards on 19 carries.
Still, the Tiger defense kept them in the game for three quarters. The Stars drove the length of the field to go up 14-7 early in the third quarter, then didn’t score again until they were given a short field early in the fourth.
The Stars finished with 492 yards of offense, including 412 yards and all five touchdowns on the ground. Four players rushed for between 80 and 92 yards.
“They ran some counter plays that really took advantage of us. They have some great speed and great athletes right now,” Froehling said. “It was tough for us to catch them on those big plays and they chewed up a lot of yardage.”
Drew Hegseth led the Farmington defense with 11 tackles. Andrew Peterson added 10 tackles and Blake Weinand chipped in nine tackles and an interception.
The Tigers (1-4) are back home tomorrow night for their Homecoming game against rival Northfield at Tiger Stadium. The Raiders (1-4) are coming off a 28-7 home loss to a Chanhassen team Farmington defeated 17-14 for its lone victory in Week 3.
