Editorial: Have your say in budget discussion

The Farmington City Council has a tricky decision coming up as it tries to finalize its budget. Council members have spent a lot of time in recent weeks discussing the possibility of increasing taxes next year and for several years to come in order to build up a fund that would allow the city to pay for big projects up front rather than bonding for the work and ultimately, because of interest, paying more for the work.

There is some good sense in the plan. While it costs residents more now, it should lead to savings in the long run.

But it’s the now that has proved troubling for many Farmington residents. With many residents already struggling with their finances, the prospect of higher taxes is particularly discouraging.

City council members find themselves stuck in the middle, trying to balance long-term planning with taking care of residents right now.

That’s why it’s particularly important for residents to let council members know how they feel about the plan. The city has already held two public forums to give residents a chance to learn more about the plan, to ask questions and to express opinions. The first two sessions were lightly attended, but there was good conversation.

The final forum will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 14 at city hall. It’s one last chance for residents to have some input on what their tax bills will look like next year.

There is no easy answer to this budget question, but the city of Farmington has done a good job of making sure residents have had an opportunity to get informed and have a say in whatever decision council members ultimately make. We hope residents take advantage of the opportunity.
