Boys hockey: Tigers lose, tie in opening week

The Farmington boys hockey team is starting the 2011-12 season with games against six straight Section 1AA opponents. The Tigers are hoping wins will be easier to come by in the next four than they were in the first two. After skating to a 2-2 tie against an equally inexperienced Rochester John Marshall team in last Tuesday’s season opener, the Tigers allowed four straight goals in an eventual 6-2 loss to Rochester Century back at Schmitz-Maki Arena Thursday.

“Century’s core group were juniors last year and are mostly intact — and it showed,” Farmington coach Keith Revels said. “Our youth and inexperience showed and they took it to us for the most part. We got away from the things we need to do well like being physical and tenacious in the defensive zone and they took advantage.”

Century got on the board first, but Sean Johnson tied the score with a goal at the 13:49 mark of the period. Blake Weinand and Marques Words each assisted.

The Panthers took the lead for good with a shot past FHS goaltender Victor Simones with 11 seconds left in the first, then knocked the puck into the net three more times in a seven-minute span in the second to take control.

Kevin Olund scored the second Tiger goal on assists from Words and John Donnelly 1:41 into the third.

Simones stopped 32 of 38 shots over the first 39 minutes. Nick Schoening took over between the pipes for the final 12 minutes and stopped all 12 Panther shots he faced.

“Vic played well early and kept the game close for a while, but they — at least on this night early in the season — were bigger, faster and stronger,” Revels said.

Simones also stopped 32 shots in last Tuesday’s season opener as the Tigers twice overcame one-goal deficits to rally for a 2-2 tie against John Marshall.

It was 1-0 Rockets early in the second when Olund got the Tigers on the board. Assists went to Donnelly and Johnson.

The Rockets took the lead back with a power-play goal in the third, but Andrew Peterson drew the score even with a goal on a pass from Grant Hauswirth with 1:56 remaining.

The Tigers (0-1-1) traveled to Winona Tuesday night and are back in action tonight when they head down I-35 to face Owatonna at the Four Seasons Center. They take on Dodge County, Rochester Mayo and Hastings and Park Cottage Grove the following two weeks before opening Missota Conference play with a road trip to Shakopee Dec. 30.
