The Farmington girls basketball team won’t take a winless record into the start of the Missota Conference season.
The Tigers ended a 10-game losing streak by knocking off host Orono 54-31 in the third-place game of the Orono Tournament Thursday. The 54 points was a season high and the 31 allowed a season-low.
“We have been putting a greater focus on our full-court defensive pressure and that is creating more scoring opportunities for us in transition,” head coach Sondra Chadwick said. “This is the level of play we need to continue to improve on as a team in order to compete in a tough conference schedule. I was very excited to see the whole team contribute and compete at this level last week.”
Ten players scored for the Tigers, who led 30-11 by halftime. Dava White led the balanced effort with her first double-double of the season, scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 of the team’s season-high 47 rebounds.
“She just seemed to be all over the floor and was giving Orono fits on defense and on the boards,” Chadwick said.
Isis Alexander and Allison Rice each added eight points. Alexander handed out a team-high five assists and Rich hauled in six rebounds.
Desi Loftus scored six points and grabbed seven boards, Sofia Chadwick had six points, seven rebounds and four assists and Mariah Mincke added six points and five rebounds.
The Tigers opened the tournament with a 61-51 loss to eventual tournament champion Sartell/St. Stephen.
The two teams played to a 28-28 deadlock in the second half after Sartell/St. Stephen built a 10-point halftime lead.
Mincke led Farmington with 17 points. Jeanna Gaalswyk and Alexander each added eight points and Chadwick had five rebounds and six assists.
The Tigers open up conference play tomorrow night at Red Wing.
