After a disappointing team showing in the first two rounds, the Farmington wrestling team came back to earn seventh at the eight-team Tiger Duals Saturday at Tiger Gym.
The Tigers started their opening dual against Park of Cottage Grove by winning the first four weights, building a 20-0 lead. The Wolfpack chipped away by winning five of the next six matches and took advantage of forfeits at 182 and 195 pounds to rally for a 40-26 victory.
The Tigers then won four of their first six matches against Lake City before once again fading late. This time, Lake City took the lead with four straight wins from 145 to 179 pounds and pulled away thanks to two more forfeits, 45-25.
The tournament hosts finally got in the win column in the seventh-place dual, beating rival Northfield 40-21. Lakeville North won the meet, beating Milaca 37-29 in the championship round.
Jamin LeDuc stepped in for Taylor Venz at 106 pounds and recorded a pin in 54 seconds. Jacob Gabbard followed with his third win of the day, a 4-2 decision that upped his record to 10-2 on the season.
Joey Liden scored a 14-8 decision against the Raiders at 126 pounds and Ridge Raddatz added a 9-0 major decision at 152 pounds. Joe Hoeve, Dakoda Louis-Dupay and Bret Hoffman each registered pins and Joey Herrera claimed Farmington’s lone forfeit win of the day at 170 pounds.
“We did not wrestle our best in the first two rounds, but responded well the final round against Northfield,” Farmington coach Chad Olson said. “We had a number of individuals who had great days.”
Joining Gabbard as undefeated wrestlers in the tournament were Venz, who won by pin and 8-4 decision to improve his record to 17-3, and Liden, who went 2-0 at 126. Louis-Dupay, Hoeve and Hoffman each won two matches.
The Tigers are back in action tonight at the Northfield Triangular. They will square off against Northfield and Rochester Century.
