Boys basketball: Farmington falls in Missota opener

Farmington boys basketball coach Shane Wyandt didn’t try to sugar-coat his team’s 67-45 Missota Conference-opening loss at Shakopee Thursday night. “We came out with little intensity or toughness and we got the result it deserved,” he said of the Tigers’ sixth road loss in eight games.

“We need to do something better as coaches to figure out why we can play so differently from home to the road. I’m at a loss as to how to get my guys to play with intensity and toughness on the road, but I will have to keep working on it.”

The Tigers (4-9) made just 7 of 24 shots from the field in the opening 18 minutes and went into the break trailing the 2-8 Sabers, 36-21. A couple of Nick Varner baskets cut the deficit to 10, but that was as close as it would get the rest of the way.

Varner ended up with a team-high 12 points. Alex Chadwick added eight points, including a pair of first-half three-pointers, and leading scorer Darren Beenken was held to six.

The Tigers were back at Tiger Gym for their first conference home game Tuesday night. They are back on the road Friday night when they travel south to take on rival Northfield.
