Your weekend: Community Expo highlights a busy weekend

Looking for something to do this weekend in Farmington? You've got plenty of choices, from movies geared for kids and a cupcake contest for teens Friday at the library to a songwriter showcase Friday night at Dunn Bros. to the big event of the weekend, Saturday's Farmington Community Expo, which is expected to bring a few thousand people to Farmington High School. Read on to see what else is happening.

Thursday

Aging and retirement workshops

Farmington Lutheran Church will hold their first in a series of aging and retirement workshops at 1 and 6 p.m. Jan. 26.

The first topic will be funeral and cremation prearrangements, to be discussed at both times to accommodate participants’ schedules.

The workshop will be presented by Meg White Heintze from White Funeral Homes. She will discuss funeral and cremation options, emotional and financial benefits of making funeral directives in advance, irrevocable funeral trusts, asset protection and veteran’s burial benefits.

Diabetes support group

Allina Medical Clinic’s diabetes support group will meet at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 26 at the clinic in Farmington. Anyone interested in diabetes is invited to attend. The speaker will be Dr. Savageau, an optometrist who will speak about diabetes and the eye.

Friday

Movies for kids

There will be fun children’s books in movie format from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Jan. 27 at the Dakota County Farmington Library. The library is located at 508 Third St.

Teen cupcake contest

Teens ages 12 to 18 can enter their best cupcake recipe in a contest from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Jan. 27 at the Dakota County Farmington Library. Registration forms are available now. The library is located at 508 Third St. For more information visit dakotacounty.us/library or call 651-438-0250.

Minnesota Songwriter Association Showcase

Six Minnesota singer-songwriters will perform half-hour sets at from 7 to 10 p.m. Jan. 27 at Dunn Bros. Coffee in Farmington. Dunn Bros. is located at 20700 Chippendale Ave.

Saturday

Community Expo

The city of Farmington, Farmington Community Education and the Farmington Independent will hold the annual Farmington Community Expo from 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 28 at Farmington High School. The event features display tables staffed by a number of local businesses and organizations as well as entertainment by Synergy Dance Center, Just For Kix Dance and the FHS drumline.
