The 3-2 losses are getting a little hard to stomach for the Farmington boys hockey team.
The Tigers suffered their third straight setback by that score against New Prague Friday night at Schmitz-Maki Arena. The team’s fourth straight one-goal loss, their eighth overall this season, was made even more frustrating by the fact Farmington blew a 2-0 lead, and outshot the Trojans 4-2 to start the overtime period before surrendering a short-handed goal.
“With all the narrow defeats we’re having trouble playing with confidence late in games. It’s been really tough for everyone,” Farmington coach Keith Revels said. “The boys played very hard and again gave themselves a chance to win.”
The Tigers (7-13-2) took the lead 16 seconds into the game on a goal by Jack Erickson. Erickson later assisted, along with Dan Block, on Grant Hauswirth’s goal that made it 2-0 in favor of the home team midway through the second period.
New Prague got on the board with just over a minute left in the second, then tied the score at 9:20 of the third period. The Trojans outshot the Tigers in all three periods and finished with a 40-28 advantage in shots on goal.
Victor Simones played all 55-plus minutes in goal and stopped 37 shots.
The Tigers broke up the streak of one-goal losses with a 6-2 blowout at last place Chaska last Monday at Chaska Community Center.
Four players scored for the visitors, including Jack Buss, who found the net twice and opened the scoring with a power-play goal (assist to Ryan Schoening) 6:44 into the first. Just 15 seconds later, Andrew Peterson made it 2-0 with the first of his two goals.
Peterson leads the team with 14 goals and 22 points.
Chaska rallied to tie the score at 2-2 before Buss (assists to Dallas Tucker and Kevin Olund) and Jack Erickson (assists to Hauswirth) scored two quick goals late in the second period.
Olund opened the third with a goal off a pass from Tucker at 5:10 and Peterson capped the scoring 34 seconds later (assists to Blake Weinand and Jordan Lugowski).
Simones stopped 24 shots in the victory.
The Tigers close out the regular season schedule this week with a road game at Chanhassen Tuesday, a Missota Conference home finale against Red Wing tonight and a non-conference section warm-up game at Rosemount against the Irish Saturday afternoon.
The Section 1AA tournament gets underway next week.
