Injuries pile up in road losses for Tiger girls basketball team

A short bench made it tough for the Farmington girls basketball team to run with Chanhassen and Shakopee last week. Abby Gallus battled the flu, Desi Loftus was on the bench with a broken finger and Gabby White went down with a dislocated elbow, leaving the Tigers with seven varsity regulars in their rotation during a 65-49 loss at Chanhassen Monday and a 53-38 loss at Shakopee Friday.

The Sabers, who held Farmington to a season-low 30 points on Jan. 13, completed the season sweep by holding the Tigers to 12 field goals.

Senior Taylor Meyer led the way with 15 points. She also grabbed three rebounds and two steals. Freshman guard Sofia Chadwick added seven points, four rebounds and four assists.

“This was a tough loss for us,” Farmington coach Sondra Chadwick said. “We lacked energy in this game from the start.”

The Tigers (5-16) trailed 29-18 by halftime and couldn’t muster a rally after seeing White go down with a season-ending injury.

“It was difficult for the team to recover from that,” Chadwick said. “We will miss Gabby’s energy on the court.”

Haley Zerr led Shakopee with 13 points. Rachel Boegeman added 10.

Chanhassen scored the final five points of the first half last Monday night and carried that momentum over into the second half of a 65-49 home win.

The Storm put four players in double figures as they improved to 19-3 overall and 10-0 in the Missota Conference.

“Chanhassen is a very deep and physical team. We were able to compete with them all the way through the middle of the second half, but their depth finally wore us down,” Chadwick said. “Our lack of depth was no match for their rotation of 11 players. I was proud of how the girls played hard until the end, but we will need to figure out how to step up to a challenge like that.”

Meyer notched another double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Chadwick dropped in 14 points and Isis Alexander scored seven points and handed out seven assists. Dava White also scored seven points.
