Gymnastics: Lorencz qualifies for state meet

Nadia Lorencz will have a much busier schedule at this year's Class 2A State Gymnastics Meet.

Lorencz qualified in three events, as well as in the all-around, while leading the Tigers to a third-place finish at the Section 3AA meet Thursday night at Park High School in Cottage Grove.

Last year, Lorencz capped off her first season of high school gymnastics with a 10th-place state finish in the vault.

The junior was once again at her best in the vault Thursday night, breaking her own school record with a first-place score of 9.725. She also tied for second in the floor exercise with a score of 9.525 and tied for third with a 9.15 in the balance beam.

Despite a fall on the uneven bars, Lorencz placed third in the all-around with a score of 37.0.

"We are very excited for Nadia. Her performance was top-notch with the exception of the bars," Farmington coach Lynn Bauman said. "She had an unusual fall, but was able to come back on the beam and hold it together."

Kiana Lord and Kylie Wharton both fell just short of state qualifications for the Tigers. Needing a top-four finish to advance, Lord placed sixth in the vault with a score of 9.275 and seventh in the floor exercise with a 9.35.

Wharton tied for sixth in the beam with an 8.7 and finished led the team with a seventh-place score of 8.825 in the bars.

The Tigers finished with their third best team score of the season, a 139.6. Host Park of Cottage Grove edged East Ridge 144.45-143.85 to advance to state. Rosemount placed fourth, followed by Eagan, Hastings, Woodbury and Henry Sibley.

"it wasn't our best, but they gave it their best," Bauman said. "I know the girls were saddened with the outcome, knowing they could have done better. But as we all know in gymnastics you get one chance and hope for the best. I am very proud of our team and all their successes this year. They have already began setting goals for next year."

The Class 2A portion of the State Gymnastics Meet gets underway at 6 o'clock Saturday night at the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion.
