Boys hockey: Tigers reeling in final week

The Farmington boys hockey team didn’t build the momentum it had hoped heading into the Section 1AA tournament.
The Tigers lost their final four games of the regular season, including three where they scored a combined four goals last week, as they slipped to sixth in the final Missota Conference standings. After Saturday’s 5-1 loss at 4-20 Rosemount, the 7-16-2 Tigers were given the No. 7 seed in Section 1AA and a date with No. 2 Lakeville North tonight at Ames Arena.
“It’s been a tough road for the coaches and players. We got off to some pretty good starts in these games, but we’re just not finding a way to put pucks away,” Farmington coach Keith Revels said. “We have spurts, but we’re struggling with consistency offensively and defensively… We’ve got a couple of days to prepare (for Lakeville North) and will give the upset opportunity a whirl.”
Saturday’s finale at Rosemount was scoreless for 17-plus minutes before the Irish found the net 30 seconds into the second period. It was 2-0 by the time Blake Weinand got the visitors on the board with a power-play goal (assists to Jack Buss and Jake Eldred) midway through the second.
The Tigers ended up being out-shot 36-16 and were 1 of 7 on the power play.
Goaltender Victor Simones stopped 31 shots in the loss.
Thursday night’s final home game was more of the same. Red Wing took a 3-0 lead into the third period and skated to a 5-1 victory at Schmitz-Maki Arena.
Ryan Schoening finally got the home team in the scoring column with an unassisted goal 6:17 into the third. Red Wing responded with two goals of its own in the next 41 seconds.
Simones finished with 28 saves.
A Chanhassen team with 13 seniors poured it on late in an 8-2 final last Tuesday at Victoria Recreation Center.
The Tigers hung around and trailed 4-2 with a minute remaining in the third, but the Storm mounted a 19-3 advantage in shots on goal in the final period as they pulled away.
Sean Johnson scored the first Farmington goal with an assist going to Weinand 6:36 into the second. Kevin Olund added a goal later in the period (assists to Jack Erickson and Jack Buss).
Simones faced a whopping 60 Chanhassen shots and stopped 52.
