With several big issues on the horizon, the Farmington School Board is going to take a little extra time to just talk.
Starting next week, the board will convert one of its twice-monthly business meetings to a workshop. Board chair Tera Lee hopes the change will allow more informal discussion.
Lee brought the proposed change to the board after discussing it with superintendent Jay Haugen. The board has used a workshop format in the past when there were items that called for additional discussion.
“You can always have great discussion at a regular board meeting, but it feels like you have a set number of things that you have to get done,” Lee said. “You want to be respectful of everyone’s time.”
At next week’s workshop session the board will discuss its budget process and proposed technology additions in district schools. Board members will also get an update on roundtable meetings that took place this week.
Board members will not typically vote on anything at workshop meetings, but there may be situations where action is necessary.
“We’re not planning on making that a habit,” Lee said.
Workshop meetings will start at 5:30 p.m., an hour earlier than regular board meetings. They will take place in the little theater at Boeckman Middle School.
The workshops will be televised.
