Farmington will try to pull a Rochester Mayo in the opening round of the Section 1AAAA tournament.

Last year, Mayo was dealt an early-season 63-38 loss by Farmington, but adjusted their lineup and improved throughout the season before finally upsetting the heavily-favored Tigers in the section championship game.

This year, the roles have been reversed. Farmington lost several key players from last year’s team, and was still without standout senior Taylor Meyer when Mayo came to town and rolled to a 60-36 victory in late December. The Tigers have improved since Meyer’s return — winning five games in their last 12 tries — and as the No. 7 seed in the section earned a chance at revenge against the second-seeded Spartans (19-6) in the section tournament Wednesday night in Rochester.

“We are a very different team than we were earlier in the season when we first played them,” Farmington coach Sondra Chadwick said. “We have a different rotation of players, Taylor is back now and the girls are more comfortable in their varsity roles at this point. I like our chances and we are putting in a lot of work this week on our game plan.”

The Tigers (6-19) didn’t put their best foot forward in Friday’s regular season finale. They made just 3 of 31 shots while scoring 12 points in the first half, and finished shooting 21 percent for the game in a 49-34 loss at New Prague.

“Plenty of good looks at the basket, but it was one of those nights where it seemed like there was a lid on the basket,” Chadwick said.

New Prague didn’t shoot much better from the floor, but pulled away with the help of 19 made free throws in the second half.

With starting guard Sofia Chadwick sidelined with the flu, Meyer led the Tigers with 14 points and nine rebounds. Fellow senior Isis Alexander added 12 points and four steals.

Chaska used a late 21-7 run to pull away for a 79-62 victory on Farmington’s Senior Night last Tuesday at Tiger Gym.

Alexander led the Tigers with a season-high 19 points. Senior Mariah Mincke added 13 points and Chadwick scored 10.

Meyer added seven points and eight rebounds.

It was the final home game for Alexander, Mincke, Meyer, Gabby White, Allie Rice, Dava White and Desi Loftus.

“All of these girls have had great careers in Farmington basketball and we wish them all the best in their futures,” Chadwick said. “We will certainly miss them after this season.”
