Farmington scored the first goal, but it was all Lakeville North from there on out in last Thursday’s Section 1AA hockey opener at Ames Arena.

The Tigers held a 1-0 advantage over nine minutes into their game against the second-seeded Panthers courtesy of a power-play goal by Sean Johnson (assists to Jack Buss and Jordan Lugowski) at 7:52. The upset bid was quickly halted as the home team scored six unanswered goals over the next 22 minutes and cruised to an 8-2 victory.

Lakeville North and top-seeded Lakeville South square off in the section finals tonight in Rochester.

Farmington, meanwhile, finished the season on a five-game losing streak and ended up 7-17-2 overall.

Considering seven of the 14 players in the Tiger rotation were playing as much JV as varsity during the season, and only five of his 11 seniors were in uniform, Farmington coach Keith Revels was pleased with his team’s effort.

“We competed hard, opened the scoring in the game and finished the first only down a goal,” he said. “We had a rough second period, but came back strong in the third. We never gave up and played until the final horn.… The seniors who made it through the year played hard in their final outing.”

The Tigers were outshot 58-11, including 23-0 during North’s four-goal second period.

Buss scored the team’s second goal (assists to Dallas Tucker and Christopher Fitzgibbons) to end a 6-0 run early in the third.

Goaltender Victor Simones finished with 50 saves.
