Many of you have heard of Shidor, the Second Hand Store in Farmington. What you may not know about it and the store’s owner, Michelle Overbey, is what really makes Shidor so special. Michelle has a deep-rooted passion to help people, and Shidor makes that possible. A percentage of the proceeds are funneled into Salt and Light to mentor and help single parents purchase a home. Michelle also uses the store to help people who are in need.
I have seen her in action on many occasions. One grateful recipient of Michelle’s generosity was a family who lost everything in a devastating fire and another instance was when she helped Trinity Care Center supply their new memory care unit with tea sets, linens, art supplies and much more.
Michelle and her son, Tegan, have sacrificed many things to help make Shidor a success. This April is our community’s chance to show them we value the positive contributions they make in Farmington and surrounding cities. Michelle needs to file for tax exempt status to become a nonprofit, which is very expensive. This nonprofit status is very important as it will allow people to write off their donations and allow Shidor to qualify for more grants to reach even more people in need. April will be Shidor’s fundraising, month with special events including:
• April 5: B&B Pizza buffet with part of the proceeds donated to Shidor
• April 3-7: Roundup days where customers will be asked if they’d like to round up purchases
• April 13: Prom dress event with all dresses $5-25
• April 17-21: Online silent auction.
As an active member of the Farmington Business Association, Michelle has a vested interest in seeing our community prosper. Let’s come together and support Shidor this April to ensure there are many more years for Shidor and many more people blessed by Michelle’s mission to give back to others and improve our community.
