Everybody’s back for FHS girls lacross team

Coach Pickens expects seniors to provide leadership for Tigers.

Last year’s team finished with a record of 1-10, but you lost four of those games by a single goal and three others by four or fewer goals. What does the team need to improve upon to come out on the other side of those close games this year?

Very good point. We just need to keep plugging away. We had some tough breaks last year, including losing our starting goalie in the third game of the season. Luckily, Kaitlyn Lacroix stepped in very well. We need to create more offense this year. We have the players to do it, we just need to execute.

Haley Bradshaw led last year’s team with 25 goals and Ally Midboe is also back after scoring 19. What does it mean to the team to have those two players back? And what other players are you expecting to make contributions offensively?

It is great to have them back. Also, don't forget about the third captain, Adrienne Jolicoeur, she is also a very big contributor. All of our seniors are also expected to contribute. Including Jessica Erchul, Tia Jacoby, and standout defenseman Kelli Harstad.

Who are your other leaders on defense?

Rachael Welzin also emerged as a great defender last year. Brittany Olson makes a great low D and we have bunch of sophomores competing for the remaining defensive spots. It should be interesting.

Lacroix is back after getting the bulk of the time at goaltender last season, and Maddie Kohlbeck also returns after getting injured early on. What is your outlook in goal?

Lacroix is an all-around athlete. She will be competing for her starting job with Kohlbeck, who had the job and tore her ACL and MCL in the third game last year. It should be a good battle.

There were no seniors on last year’s roster. In what areas do you think an added year of experience will help this team the most?

I am expecting these seniors to be very vocal leaders this year. I am hoping we find a way to execute on offense and be creative in the offensive zone. We have great seniors and a bunch of young up and comers that need some positive leadership on and off the field. I am confident that they are up to the challenge.
