Simley used a sweep of doubles play to secure a 5-2 victory over Farmington Monday afternoon at Simley High School.
The Tigers picked up their victories in singles play, where Ivan Rodriguez and Bennett Lagro each improved to 2-0 on the season. Rodriguez, a sophomore, picked up a 6-3, 6-3 decision at No. 3 singles, while Lagro, an eighth-grader, won the last four games to claim his second straight three-setter, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.
The other two singles matches were well-contested. Blake Olmscheid fell 4-6, 2-6 at No. 1 singles and Ben Cline fell 2-6, 3-6 at No. 2 singles.
All three doubles matches were competitive. Tyler Olsen and Jeff Zakoski lost 3-6, 2-6 at No. 1 doubles, Austin Tremmel and Trent Kortenbush led 6-5 in a 6-7 (6), 2-6 setback at No. 2 doubles and Austin Rau and Jon Zakoski had a 5-2 advantage in the tiebreaker before falling, 6-7 (5), 1-6.
The Tigers opened the season with a 4-3 loss at Lakeville South last Thursday.
Olmscheid opened his senior season with a victory, pulling away 7-6 (11), 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Rodriguez overcame a 4-1 deficit to close out a 7-6 (5), 6-4 win at No. 3 singles and Lagro won his first career varsity match, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5.
The Tigers had their first home meet of the year Wednesday against Park at Boeckman Middle School. They’re back home on Monday against Faribault.
