The Farmington girls lacrosse team finally had a close game go its way Monday night.
The Tigers, who lost four games by a single goal last season, one of them to Lakeville South in double overtime, exacted some revenge and evened their record at 1-1 by rallying for a 12-10 victory over the Cougars at Tiger Stadium.
“You have no idea how good it feels to have one of those games go our way. The girls earned it and deserved it,” Farmington coach Dan Pickens said. “We lost a bunch of one- or two goal games last year, it is good to see us get a win like that against a very good Lakeville South team.… They were expecting us and we still got them.”
Pickens gave credit to his three captains for stepping up. Adrienne Jolicoeur (two goals), Haley Bradshaw (four goals) and Ally Midboe (three goals) combined to score nine of the team’s 12 goals. Jessica Erchul also scored twice and Rachael Welzin added a single goal.
Midboe, Bradshaw, Betsy Anderson and Michaela Tonsager came up with assists. Tonsager’s helper set up a key second-half goal by Midboe that gave the Tigers the lead.
The FHS defense, led by Kelli Harstad, also stepped up in the second half as the home team rallied from a 5-4 halftime deficit.
“Defensively we did a great job making adjustments and shutting down their top players that were scoring in the first half. Kelli Harstad did a great job leading the defense and shutting them down in the last minutes of the game,” Pickens said. “What a great effort by the girls, they won the small battles. The ground balls, draws, loose balls. They won the game because they had more grit.”
Goaltender Maddie Kohlbeck faced 16 South shots and finished with six saves.
The Tigers were back on the road Tuesday night against Eastview.
