Editorial: Class of 2012 has done a lot

On Friday night nearly 400 Farmington High School students will walk across the stage either at Tiger stadium or in the FHS gym. They will receive their diplomas and they will take their first steps, at least symbolically, toward whatever is next for them.

No doubt FHS principal Ben Kusch will spend some time during the ceremony talking about accomplishments of the class he will send on its way. He probably won’t spend as much time as he could. That might keep people there all night.

This has been a remarkably successful class. Like many that have come before at FHS these students have had success in the classroom, on the athletic field and in the community. They have competed at the state and national level in both athletic and academic endeavors.

Students have worked to make a difference in their schools with their continued efforts to make homecoming a positive event, and they have reached out to the community with events like Games for Change, the annual night of athletic competition that has become a major source of donations for the Farmington Food Shelf.

We have known, or at least known of, many of these students since they were in elementary school. We have written stories about some of them. We have run their photos. We have seen them grow from enthusiastic grade schoolers to sometimes awkward teens to students who are full of promise.

As always, it has been our pleasure to be there for the process. This year’s graduates have accomplished a lot as they progressed through the school system in Farmington, and we expect them to continue making remarkable accomplishments as they go on from here.

We look forward to seeing what they do.
