City of Farmington's finance director resigns abruptly

Two days after Theresa Walters abruptly resigned from her position as finance director, the city of Farmington had started advertising to fill the position.

Farmington city administrator David McKnight was close-lipped on the circumstances surrounding Walters' departure. "I don't comment on personnel matters," he said Friday afternoon.

What he could say, though, was that he received Walters' letter of resignation on June 6. Her resignation was effective immediately. Walters is no longer employed at the city of Farmington.

The Farmington City Council will have its first 2013 budget workshop on Monday, even without a finance director in place. McKnight said he has been in charge of the budget in every place he has worked in the past, and he plans to assume that same role here in Farmington.

"We will work as a team between the department heads and the council to make sure we don't miss a thing," he said.

For the short term, the finance department staff will be asked to take on a few of the more day-to-day tasks.

"It's going to cause some work for people, including me, but we'll get through it," McKnight said.

The city does intend to replace Walters, he added. In fact, on Friday, the Farmington opening was posted through the League of Minnesota Cities and the Government Finance Officers Association. According to the LMC listing, the salary range offered is $76,447 to $93,864. Applications will be accepted through July 5.

Walters had been with the city of Farmington just over two years when she resigned.
