Farmington has a new affordable housing option for senior citizens, and the units are filling up fast.
The first 17 residents of the Vermillion River Crossings senior housing complex moved into their new homes last week, and more are scheduled to move in on June 19.
The housing complex is a project of the Dakota County Community Development Agency, which has an affordable housing program for senior citizens.
“This is our first housing development in Farmington,” said Sara Swenson, assistant director of administration at the CDA. “We’re very excited to be in Farmington.”
The Vermillion River Crossings complex is the 25th senior housing building in the CDA’s program. In order to qualify for housing, residents must be at least 55 years old and be on a limited income. Tenants commit to an annual lease. Rent for a one-bedroom apartment is $566, and two-bedroom units are $691 per month. There are six fixed market rate units in the building, with rental rates of $900 per month.
All told, there are 66 units in the new Vermillion River Crossing complex, each of which has a screened-in porch. The building also includes a community room with a kitchen that can be used for community gatherings or private parties, an exercise room, a club room for smaller gatherings and underground parking. Laundry facilities are located on each floor, as well.
The CDA doesn’t plan or execute any kinds of social groups within the buildings, though it’s not uncommon for residents of the apartment complexes to form such groups, Swenson said.
“Those kinds of things usually get started up after a few months. Residents start their own activity committees, like birthday clubs, Bingo, and so on. It’s really up to them what they want to do,” she said.
In many cases, residents have lived in that community for several years prior to moving into a CDA complex. But there are also a fair number of new residents who move to a community when there is an opening in one of the CDA’s buildings.
“We find that at all of our buildings, they kind of get to become their own family. They will be forming new friendships and new relationships as they all get settled in,” Swenson said.
It will be a few weeks before some of the interior decorating is finished, but for now, the building is open and ready for residents. Swenson expects the units to be filled by September. An open house will be scheduled sometime in October.
