Editorial: Dew Days crew deserves thanks

Organizing an event like Dew Days is a thankless job. You deal with complaints for months before the first activity takes place. You deal with complaints while everything is going on. And then, when it’s all over, you deal with some more complaints.

Organizing an event like Dew Days is a thankless job. You deal with complaints for months before the first activity takes place. You deal with complaints while everything is going on. And then, when it’s all over, you deal with some more complaints.

There are probably a few compliments in there, but the ratio never seems to be what you would like.

That’s too bad, because the group that puts Dew Days together each year deserves some credit. That goes for the current group as well as any previous group that has taken on the task, whether or not their version of the event was a complete success.

The past two years, Dew Days has largely been a success in spite of some significant challenges. For two straight years the event has been beset by rain. This year there was a disruption to the parade when a semi that had driven the route dozens of times before snagged a power line. And another when, of all things, the kiss-the-pig pig took ill. There was backup animal, but somehow kiss the puppy just doesn’t have the same ring to it.

Despite all that, though, we saw happy crowds on the streets in Farmington for much of the festival. People were here to take in events, or to browse vendors. They were having a good time, and that as much as anything is the sign of a good event.

After a few years of struggles, Dew Days seems to be gaining good traction in the community, and that’s a good thing.

It takes a lot of work to put on something like Dew Days. A lot of people sacrificed a lot of their spare time to make sure the rest of the community came together to have a good time last weekend.

For that, we thank them.
