The Farmington Legion Post 189 baseball team was flying high after Tuesday’s 2-1 victory over Faribault.

Coming off a second-place finish at the Grand Rapids Tournament, Post 189 got a complete-game effort from pitcher Drew Hegseth as it improved to 7-4 on the season.

Then the combination of 90-degree temperatures and Northfield’s hot bats joined forces in bringing the team back down to earth. A couple of Farmington players battled heat exhaustion in a 15-5 home loss to Northfield last Wednesday. Things played out in a similar fashion when the two teams took the field less than 24 hours later in Dundas as Northfield rolled to an 11-1 victory.

Both games were called after six innings due to the 10-run rule.

“That’s our biggest rival. The kids know it, so it hurts worse than losing to anybody. Getting 10-runned by them twice in two days is especially demoralizing,” Farmington coach Andy Pierskalla said. “It’s tough to keep a high level of intensity when it’s so hot and I think we kind of had a hangover coming off a good tournament. We just have to get a little mentally tougher.”

Post 189 doesn’t play again until next Tuesday when it travels to New Prague for a doubleheader. The following weekend the team will play at least five games at the Gopher Classic, one of the largest tournaments in the nation.
