Farmington High School musical moves to the fall

The spring musical has become somewhat of a tradition at Farmington High School, it is a very popular event. This year, though, audiences won't have to wait until the spring because for the first time there is going to be a fall musical.

The idea for a fall play came from FHS English teacher Maria Capecchi. Capecchi has a degree in theater, she was the director of the musical at Rush City High School for two years and was also the speech coach there for five years.

Capecchi wanted the opportunity to direct the musical but is unable to do it in the spring because of her commitment to the speech team. She also was interested in giving kids who play a spring sport a chance to participate in the musical.

This year’s musical is “Once Upon a Mattress,” a musical comedy based on the children’s story “The Princess and the Pea.” In this musical there are many parts for people interested in acting or interested another aspect of theater. Capecchi said she wants to give students “a full theater experience, not just an acting experience.”

This year students will build the set and design costumes. Students will be much more involved in the overall production of the musical.

With a production this large Capecchi won't be able to do it all by herself. She will have teachers Sarah Stout, Megan Dimich, Beth Brieland and Jeff Gottwig all helping in various places throughout the production.

Auditions for the fall musical will take place from noon until 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20 and from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday Aug. 21. Auditions are open to FHS students grades nine through 12. Students interested should meet in the FHS choir room ready to dance, sing, and preform a one-minute monologue.

Rehearsals for the play will begin Aug. 22, and the show will be on stage Nov. 15, 16 and 17.
