Justin Hyytinen was part of plenty of first-place finishes during his freshman track campaign last spring.
He added a cross country gold medal to his collection last Tuesday in New Prague.
The sophomore clocked in at 16 minutes, 38 seconds on the 5K?course, placing him first out of 85 runners. He led the Tigers to fourth place out of 12 teams.
Freshman Alex Hart also cracked the top 20, placing 19th in 17:53. The rest of the team’s top five came across the finish in a 15-second span, with seniors Tyler Lerbakken (21st, 17:57), Tommy Weigel (26th, 18:07) and Adam Wallenta (28th, 18:12) all turning in counting scores. Caleb Eiffert and Sean Dougherty also competed in the varsity race.
The Tiger girls followed up a runner-up showing at Pine Island with their second straight second-place team finish. Host New Prague edged them for the team title, 53-71.
The team was strong up front, with Maricia Pacheco and Sofia Chadwick both placing in the top 10. Pacheco was fourth on the 4K?course in 15:38 and Chadwick was sixth in 15:57.
No. 3 runner Maria Kiminski followed in 18th place with a time of 16:25 and Alexis Johnson and Maricella Pacheco provided the final two counting scores, placing 20th and 23rd, respectively.
Lexi Laube and Sarah Cummings also competed for the varsity.
The Tiger runners competed again Tuesday in Chaska and travel to Duluth for a meet this weekend.
