Organized for Farmington: November news and notes

A monthly update from your Farmington area organizations and clubs.

Farmington Rotary Club

Halloween was just last week, but the Rotary Club of Farmington already has Christmas on its mind. The club will hold its traditional holiday luncheon for Farmington-area seniors on Dec. 13 at St. Michael's Catholic Church.

The annual luncheon features a catered meal, entertainment and a gift bag. More information about the event is available from Missie Kohlbeck at Rambling River Center or from a Rotarian.

The Farmington Rotary holds its regular meetings at noon Thursdays at Celts.

Farmington Lions Club

The Farmington Lions Club took part in the Patriotic Day celebration at Farmington High School along with many other community organizations on Nov. 1. We had a great turnout to honor the Korean War veterans.

We will be selling Christmas trees with the Rosemount Lions as a fundraiser. The tree lot will be in Rosemount close to the Pizza Hut. Stop in and visit us.

We also have several locations in Farmington where we collect old used glasses and hearing aids to be recycled and reused. The yellow wooden boxes were made by Lion Jeff Thelen. They have the Lions logo on them.

Farmington Yellow Ribbon Network

Thank you to the VFW and Legion Auxiliaries and the Farmington Yellow Ribbon Student Chapter for helping us host the November Veteran dinner at the VFW. The veterans had a great time and enjoyed singing from the girls group at Christian Life School.

Our next Veteran Dinner will be hosted by St. Michaels Church, 22120 Denmark Ave. on Monday, Dec. 3, at 6 p.m. All veterans are welcome. RSVP at 651-460-2248.

The January dinner will be held Jan. 7 at Trinity Care Center.

We are currently supporting a few families with deployed dads. If you would like to volunteer on a Saturday morning with yard work or basic housecleaning, let us know. Also, we are seeking someone to help with snow removal this winter for a local military family. Contact us at 651-460-02248 if you can help.

Please let us know if you know of any veteran, service members or military family needing assistance. That is what we are all about.

Farmington VFW

High School Girls Hockey hosted a Steak Fry on Saturday night at the VFW Club. There was a good turn-out for the girls.

Monday night Nov. 5, the Farmington Yellow Ribbon Network hosted the monthly Veterans dinner at the VFW Club.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars, visited six elementary schools this fall, and instructed them in Flag Etiquette, and Flag Folding.

Cub Scout Troop #117, sponsored a Flag Folding Ceremony. They invited other Cub Scout Troops to participate. It was held at the Library in Farmington. The scouts and parents watched as the Flag outside the Library was brought down, folded and sent it up again. Four Cub Scout troops, and parents were there.

This Friday, there will be a comedy act at the VFW Club. The event starts at 7:30 p.m. Bring your friends along and join us.

Nov. 17 will be a Boy Scout Troop #119 Steak Fry dinner. Serving will be from 5:-8 p.m.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will be at the VFW Club Dec. 1, 1-3 p.m. The kids can have their picture taken with Santa and Mrs. Claus, plus a can of soda, and a bag of goodies.

Bring your worn or tattered flag to the VFW Club for proper disposal. We also have flags on hand for sale.

Dakota County Farmington Library

The Dakota County Farmington Library and ISD 192 Community Education are partnering in the name of gingerbread. On Saturday, Dec. 1, enter a Gingerbread House Contest and have your entry displayed as part of Farmington's Downtown Dazzle Day. Pick up a registration form and details at the Library.

If you've never created one before, register to attend Gingerbread Houses 101 on Monday, Nov. 19 from 6:30-8 p.m. at the library. Learn how to decorate a gingerbread house and how to make one of your own to enter in the contest. The entries will be on display from 2-5 p.m. on Dec. 1.

On Dec. 6 from 10:30-11:30 a.m., the library and ISD 192 ECFE will hold a Books and Beyond program with a gingerbread house theme. Hear a story and decorate a gingerbread house to take home. Registration is required. This program is for ages 0-6.

Farmington American Legion

Happy Veterans Day to all of our community’s Veterans.

The Farmington American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 189 were proud to be a part of last week’s Patriotic Day ceremony at Farmington High School.

Congratulations on a job well done goes to Anna Larson, Mistress of Ceremony. Anna represented ALA?Unit 189 in last summer’s Girls State program, and continued to represent our organization with style as a host of Patriotic Day.

This year’s Veterans Day breakfast will be held at Tailgaters (formerly the American Legion) from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., with a program at 10 a.m. A free dinner is offered to all veterans.

The Sons of the American Legion Squadron 189 will hold its monthly omelet breakfast Sunday, Nov. 11, from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Proceeds will go toward SAL’s projects and the Farmington community.

For God and Country.
